Handcrafted from Vegetable Ivory, a seed from the Phytelephas Macrocarpa palm tree, which grows in Columbia. Today, Vegetable Ivory has become increasingly important as the only natural, ethical and sustainable alternative to the finest elephant ivory because the texture and colour are almost identical. Vegetable Ivory has a wonderfully tactile feel to it.

Martha Lizarazo lives in London and works with highly skilled artisans from Columbia to create jewellery designs that are beautiful and unique. The seed is harvested from the ground and allowed to dry naturally for up to a year until hard enough to be used. The harvesters remove the first two husks, leaving only the skin which is then sold to craftsmen. They peel the skin to expose its white ivory part, which is then cut or carved into different shapes, before being polished and dyed.
